Early career (1985-2007)

Since his childhood, Ranveer Singh nourished the dream of being an actor. That is why when he joined the school he began taking part in various school plays and debates. He himself quotes “I must say, I was a very filmy kid. I used to watch a lot of TV and get very influenced by Bollywood.” But when he joined college at H.R. College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai the realization gradually set on him that the idea of getting a break in the Bollywood industry was not an easy task at all. Because of the fact that it is mostly those people, who have a filmy background that get the best opportunities in Bollywood film industry, Ranveer left the idea of becoming an actor on the grounds that it is “too farfetched”. Instead he set his eyes in following the second passion of his life which is creative writing. He went on to pursue Bachelor of Arts from the Indiana University located in Bloomington.

During his Indiana University days, Ranveer started seriously pursuing the acting classes along with studying. There he started realizing his childhood dreams and therefore he took up the subject of theater as his minor. He returned to India in 2007 after completing his studies and started his career as a copy writer in well known advertising agencies like Ogilvy & Mather’s and JWT. He also started working as an Assistant Director but then left it to focus his attention solely on acting. He also started sending his portfolio to a number of directors.

His strategy was to remain a “fresh face” and that is the reason why he chose to opt out from doing minor roles, acting in TV serials, doing ads and appearing in music videos. He himself said, “It was a gamble and I took that gamble telling myself that I will give it my all to bag a lead role.” It was a gamble that made him struggle for three long years. He went to the offices of the producers, showed them his pictures and asked for work. He used to attend all sorts of auditions. Instead of getting calls for good roles, he would get calls for minor roles and that too only once in four or five months. Those were hard times for him. He himself said, “Everything was so bleak. It was very frustrating.”

Finally it’s time for Band Baaja Baaraat

After struggling for almost three and half years, in January 2010, Ranveer got a call from the office of Yash Raj Films. He was contacted by Shanoo Sharma, the head of the casting division of YRF. Ranveer went in for the audition and was asked to enact two scenes. The call came as a surprise for Ranveer because YRF usually does not provide platform to the newcomers and debutants. But it was the single audition which was about to change Ranveer’s life forever. His audition tapes were viewed by none other than Aditya Chopra himself who is the Vice President of YRF. He was impressed by Ranveer’s acting and gave his nod to cast Ranveer.

Ranveer was called in for some more auditions, this time to earn the confidence of Maneesh Sharma, director of Band Baaja Baaraat. Ranveer had to enact emotional scenes, dance, read the dialogues with the writer and the other co actors. He was also required to take the screen tests. Finally after 14 days, Ranveer was able to bag the lead role of Bittoo Sharma in Band Baaja Baaraat. In order to portray the role in a more convenient manner, Ranveer was even asked to visit Delhi University and get a fair idea about the mannerisms of the boys at the Delhi University campus.

The romantic comedy titled Band Baaja Baaraat that dealt with the industry of wedding planning was released on 10 December, 2010. The film was a commercial success and earned moderate reviews. But quite interestingly this film also gained positive critical reviews. What made Band Baaja Baaraat stood apart from other commercial films is that this film went on to win several awards most of them pertaining to the categories like Hottest Pair, Best Debut (Male), Most promising newcomer, Best Debutant Director, Favorite Jodi, Favorite Debutant Actor etc. Ranveer alone bagged several of the best debut (male) awards at various award ceremonies which catapulted both his popularity as well as his acting career to an altogether greater height.

Post Band Baaja Baaraat years

After the success of Band Baaja Baaraat, Ranveer went on to sign another film under YRF. This film was named Ladies vs Ricky Bahl and was directed by Maneesh Sharma. Ranveer essayed the role of a conman who dupes girls and later falls in real love. Other than Ranveer the “ladies” included Anushka Sharma, Parineeti Chopra, Dipannita Sharma and Aditi Sharma. The shooting of this film started in April 2011 and the film released on 9 December 2011. Overall Ladies vs Ricky Bahl earned mixed reviews.

Ranveer has already signed up for his third film titled Lootera that is to be directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. In this film Ranveer will be paired opposite Sonakshi Sinha. While the shooting of this film stated, Ranveer had already moved forward to bag the fourth film in his kitty. His fourth film is going to be directed by Anurag Kashyap and will be the remake of the 2009 Telegu film named Magadheera. This film is going to be a periodic film where Ranveer will be seen essaying the role of a passionate lover and a warrior.

Although just two films old, Ranveer Singh has already given rise to a controversies and gossips surrounding him. The latest has been a war of words among Anushka, Ranveer and Sonakshi. The entire film industry as well as the media was abuzz with rumors as to whether Ranveer has moved on from Anushka and dating Sonakshi instead. To add spice to this rumor, Ranveer even performed with Sonakshi at the IIFA Awards in Toronto in June, 2011. With Ranveer and Sonakshi pairing up for Lootera one can only wait and expect to see more things unfold before them.
